P177B00 fault code: clutch 1 tolerance limit reached on a DSG
Gepubliceerd door ATR Transmissies, op 4 november 2026Fault code P177B00 on a Volkswagen Group dual-clutch gearbox means “Clutch 1, tolerance limit reached”. The gearbox control unit can no longer adjust the bite point of the first clutch within its permitted range. The cause is usually clutch wear, a problem with the clutch actuation or a fault in the mechatronic unit.
Do you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda or SEAT with a DSG, and does the gearbox judder when pulling away, drop into limp mode or engage first gear roughly? Then P177B00 is often stored in the fault memory. At ATR Transmissies in Montfoort we diagnose and repair DSG gearboxes every week. Below you can read what the code means, where it comes from and when a targeted repair is enough.
What does fault code P177B00 mean?
P177B is a manufacturer-specific code from the Volkswagen Group for dual-clutch gearboxes. It reports that the control unit can no longer operate clutch 1 within the permitted tolerance. On your diagnostic tool it usually appears in one of these forms:
- P177B00 Clutch 1, tolerance limit reached
- P177B Clutch 1 tolerance limit reached
- In Dutch tools: P177B Koppeling 1, tolerantiegrens bereikt
A DSG constantly adjusts itself. The mechatronic unit learns where the bite point (kiss point) of each clutch sits and corrects that value as the clutch wears. That correction has a limit. Once the bite point drifts further than the software allows, there is nothing left to adjust and the control unit stores P177B00. So the code is not a simple sensor fault. It is the signal that clutch 1 has run out of adaptation range.
Clutch 1 drives the odd gears. On the seven-speed DQ200 that means first, third, fifth and seventh. On the six-speed DQ250 the same clutch also drives reverse, which explains why some cars with this code struggle when reversing.
P177B or P177B00: why the description differs
P177B and P177B00 are the same fault. The two extra digits are the failure type byte, which tells you what kind of fault it is. One tool shows only P177B, another shows P177B00, and a third adds a subcode.
Also look closely at the description. Depending on the tool, the language and the software version of the control unit, you may see wording that seems contradictory. The meaning stays the same: the adaptation value of clutch 1 is outside the range the gearbox can still correct. So go by the measured values, not only by the translated text on your screen. You can look up other codes in our overview of transmission fault codes.
Which gearboxes get P177B00?
The code belongs to the Volkswagen Group dual-clutch gearboxes and appears most often on the DQ200, the seven-speed DSG with dry clutches (gearbox code prefix 0AM or 0CW). That gearbox is fitted to front-wheel-drive models with smaller engines, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Polo, Audi A1 and A3, Skoda Octavia, Fabia and Yeti, and SEAT Ibiza and Leon. You may also see clutch tolerance codes on the wet-clutch DQ250 and on Audi’s S tronic gearboxes.
Dry clutches are more sensitive to wear and heat than wet clutches running in oil. That is why this code turns up so often on the DQ200. You can read more about this gearbox in our articles on DQ200 problems and DSG problems. Not sure which gearbox your car has? Our guide on which DSG gearbox you have helps you find out.
Symptoms of fault code P177B00
The complaints usually start subtly and get worse over time. In practice you notice one or more of these:
- Judder or shudder when pulling away, especially from a standstill.
- A slipping clutch: the revs rise without the car gaining speed.
- Slow or reluctant engagement of the odd gears.
- Trouble reversing, on gearboxes where reverse runs through clutch 1.
- A gearbox warning on the dashboard or limp mode, where the gearbox stays in a limited number of gears.
- Complaints that get worse once the gearbox is warm and disappear for a while after switching the ignition off and on.
That last point catches people out. The fault seems gone, but the cause is still there and the wear carries on.
What causes P177B00?
P177B00 has a handful of realistic causes. Which one applies only becomes clear from the diagnosis and the measured values. So do not order a clutch kit on the code alone.
A worn or slipping clutch
The most common cause is wear of the clutch. As the friction lining gets thinner, the bite point moves. The mechatronic unit compensates for that up to a point and then reports that the limit has been reached. A clutch that has been slipping or juddering for a while speeds up that process.
Clutch actuation and free play
The clutch is operated by an actuator and a release lever. If the actuation runs stiffly, the position feedback is wrong, or there is too much play between the actuator and the lever, the control unit cannot set the bite point accurately enough. The result is the same code, while the clutch itself still has enough lining.
The mechatronic unit and position sensors
The mechatronic unit contains the control unit, the hydraulics and the sensors that report the clutch position. If those sensors pass on an incorrect value, the gearbox calculates a bite point that does not match reality and the adaptation still gets stuck. On the DQ200 this is a known source of faults, and this is exactly where a targeted repair is often possible instead of a complete rebuild.
An earlier repair without the correct adaptation
If a clutch, a flywheel or a mechatronic unit was recently replaced, a basic setting with clutch adaptation must always follow. If that step is skipped or not completed, P177B00 comes back on parts that are technically fine.
Diagnosis and fix for P177B00
A good diagnosis tells you whether you are dealing with wear, the actuation or the mechatronic unit. That difference decides the repair and the cost.
Read the fault memory and assess the live data
First read the complete fault memory of the gearbox control unit, including any related codes. Then check the live data for clutch 1: the adaptation values, the bite point and the clutch torque. Those numbers show how far the gearbox is from its limit and whether the sensor values make sense.
Basic setting and clutch adaptation
If the clutch is still within its physical limits, a basic setting with a new clutch adaptation can clear the code. The procedure must be completed in full, including the test drive that belongs to it. If the code returns straight away, the adaptation range really is used up and the problem is in the hardware. Our article on resetting a DSG explains what a reset can and cannot do.
Clutch or mechatronic unit
If the measured values point to worn lining, replacing the DSG clutch is the logical next step. If the deviations sit in the sensors or the actuation, a targeted repair of the mechatronic unit is usually enough. ATR Transmissies repairs these units at component level, so you do not pay for a complete gearbox or a complete mechatronic unit when you do not need one. That is our point of view on every DSG: measure first, then replace only what the data shows is faulty.
Related fault codes
P177B00 is rarely the only code in the memory. These often appear alongside it:
- P177C00: clutch 2 tolerance limit reached, the counterpart for the even gears.
- P189A: a clutch 1 adaptation fault, shown by some tools as “clutch 1, clearance too small”.
- P17BF00: hydraulic pump protection limit reached, which points at the mechatronic unit rather than the clutch. See our article on fault code P17BF.
If several clutch codes are stored at the same time, that points more often to the mechatronic unit or the actuation than to one worn clutch half. Here too, the measured values decide.

What does it cost to fix fault code P177B00?
The cost depends entirely on the cause. An adaptation that solves the problem is a very different job from a new clutch or a mechatronic repair. Naming a figure before the gearbox has been read and assessed is therefore not realistic. The main cost factors are the cause, the gearbox type, whether the mechatronic unit is involved and any damage to the flywheel. At ATR Transmissies you first get clarity about the cause, then a concrete proposal for your car. Contact us for a price indication based on your registration number and complaint.

Frequently asked questions about fault code P177B00
Can you keep driving with fault code P177B00?
Driving calmly is usually still possible, but it is not wise. A clutch working outside its range slips and produces heat, and that heat also stresses the flywheel and the parts around it. Keep driving and the damage grows, and so does the repair. Have the code read soon.
Is P177B00 the same as P177B?
Yes. Both refer to the same fault on clutch 1. The extra digits show the fault type and differ between diagnostic tools and software versions. For the diagnosis it makes no difference.
Does P177B00 always mean a new clutch?
No. The code says the adaptation of clutch 1 has run out, not which part is broken. Wear is the most common cause, but the actuator, play in the clutch actuation and the mechatronic unit can produce the same picture. Only after assessing the measured values is it clear what needs to be done.
Can a reset or clutch adaptation clear the code?
Sometimes. If the clutch is still within its physical limits, a correctly performed basic setting with clutch adaptation can clear the code. If the code comes back within a short time, that proves the cause is in the hardware.
Which cars get P177B00 most often?
Mainly Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT models with the seven-speed dry-clutch DSG, the DQ200. Think of the Golf, Polo, Audi A1 and A3, Skoda Octavia and Fabia, and SEAT Ibiza and Leon. On wet-clutch gearboxes and S tronic the code appears less often, but it is not ruled out.
Conclusion
Fault code P177B00 tells you that clutch 1 of your DSG has reached its tolerance limit and that the gearbox can no longer adjust the bite point. Behind that one code can be a worn clutch, a sticking actuator or a problem in the mechatronic unit. Only reading the gearbox and assessing the measured values shows which one it is, and that difference decides whether an adaptation is enough or parts need replacing.
