P175E00 (P175E): clutch 1 closes unintentionally on your DSG

Gepubliceerd door ATR Transmissies, op 4 november 2026

Fault code P175E00, also shown as P175E, means “clutch 1 closes unintentionally”: the transmission control unit sees clutch 1 of your DSG gearbox engage when it should be open. To protect the gearbox, it drops into limp mode or allows only half of the gears. On the DQ381 and DQ200, the cause usually sits in the mechatronic unit.

If your Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda or SEAT suddenly crawls along in limp mode and the scan tool shows P175E00, the first quote you get may be for a complete mechatronic unit or even a new gearbox. That is often more than the fault needs. At ATR Transmissies in Montfoort we see this code mostly on the DQ381, and in our experience the problem usually sits in the transmission control unit itself, which can be repaired in a targeted way. Below you will find what the code means, which gearboxes it affects, what causes it and how to get it diagnosed without replacing parts on a guess.

What does fault code P175E00 mean?

P175E00 means the transmission control unit has detected that clutch 1 closed when it had not been told to. Volkswagen Group diagnostics describe it as “clutch 1 closes unintentionally”, stored with symptom code 10747 on the DQ381.

A DSG (direct-shift gearbox) is really two gearboxes side by side, each with its own clutch. Clutch 1 drives the odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7), clutch 2 the even gears. While you drive in an even gear, the next odd gear is already preselected, but clutch 1 must stay open until the shift.

Why an unintended clutch closing is a serious fault

If clutch 1 grips while clutch 2 is still carrying the drive, two gears try to transmit power at the same time. The gearbox cannot tolerate that. The software recognises it and immediately limits what the gearbox may do, usually by locking out the affected half. That is why P175E00 almost always comes with a complaint you can feel, rather than sitting silently in the fault memory.

How scan tools show the code

Different tools show the same fault in different ways:

  • P175E00 or P175E: the same fault, written with or without the two-digit suffix.
  • 10747: the symptom code that Volkswagen Group documentation lists for P175E00 on the DQ381 (0GC and 0DL).

Some translated code lists describe P175E as “clutch 1 opens unintentionally”. That is a different code: “opens unintentionally” is P175D00. For P175E00 the original text is “closes unintentionally”.

Which DSG gearboxes show P175E00?

P175E00 appears mainly on seven-speed DSG gearboxes from the Volkswagen Group. Here is where it turns up:

Gearbox Gearbox codes Clutch type Typical use
DQ381 0GC, 0DL Wet (runs in oil) Seven-speed DSG for stronger engines, introduced in 2017
DQ200 0AM, 0CW Dry Seven-speed DSG for smaller engines
DQ500 0BH Wet Seven-speed DSG for high torque and larger vehicles

On the DQ381, the cars we see most often at ATR are the Volkswagen Tiguan, Passat and Arteon, the Audi Q3, the Skoda Kodiaq and Superb and the SEAT Tarraco. That explains searches such as “P175E00 VW Tiguan”, “P175E00 Audi” or “P175E00 Skoda”: it is the same gearbox under a different badge. If you drive a Tiguan, also read about the known Volkswagen Tiguan problems.

On the DQ200 the code means the same thing, but the construction around it is different: dry clutches and a separate design of mechatronic unit. So the repair differs too.

What are the symptoms of P175E00?

P175E00 nearly always gives symptoms you notice straight away. The most common are:

  • The gearbox drops into limp mode (emergency mode), sometimes only after a stretch of driving.
  • You can only drive in the odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) or only in the even gears.
  • After switching the ignition off and on, the car sometimes drives normally for a while until the fault returns.
  • Jerking, juddering or poor shifting, especially at low speed.
  • The gearbox warning light comes on, or “Gearbox malfunction” appears on the dashboard.
  • In the worst case nothing engages and the car will not move.

The third point is typical. A fault that seems to disappear after a restart often points to electronics that are failing internally. It is tempting to keep driving, especially when it only plays up now and then, but a gearbox stuck in limp mode on a busy motorway is unpleasant and continuing to drive can turn a repairable control unit fault into clutch and mechanical damage.

What causes P175E00?

The cause of P175E00 lies in the control of clutch 1. In most cases we see in Montfoort, the problem is in the mechatronic unit, and specifically in the transmission control unit (TCU) that is part of it.

  • The TCU in the mechatronic unit. The mechatronic unit combines the valve body and the transmission control unit in one assembly. When the control unit fails internally, the control of clutch 1 is no longer correct and P175E00 appears. On the DQ381 this is the most common cause. Audi’s own technical service bulletin for the 0GC and 0DL gives “hardware issue in transmission control unit” as the technical background for P175E00 and related codes.
  • Pressure sensors. On the DQ381 and DQ500 the clutch position is calculated from the oil pressure measured by sensors on the control unit’s circuit board. If those sensors read wrongly, the control unit miscalculates the clutch and can set P175E00.
  • Adaptation values and an interrupted basic setting. Large deviations in the clutch adaptation, or a basic setting that was interrupted, can also set this code. After any work on the gearbox the basic setting must be completed properly.
  • Oil pressure and the clutch actuator. If the pressure on clutch 1 is wrong, or the actuator does not regulate properly, the clutch can close when it should not. On a wet-clutch gearbox, checking the oil level and oil condition belongs to every diagnosis.
  • Mechanical damage to clutch 1. This rarely comes first. It usually develops because the car was driven too long with a clutch that was being controlled wrongly. On the dry-clutch DQ200, clutch wear plays a bigger role than on the wet DQ381.

P175E00 does not tell you which of these it is. That is what the diagnosis is for. Guessing at parts on a DSG is rarely sensible and usually expensive.

Related codes: P175D00, P176E00, P176F00, P173500 and P173600

P175E00 rarely comes alone. On the DQ381, Audi’s bulletin lists it together with these codes:

Code Symptom code Meaning
P175D00 10693 Clutch 1 opens unintentionally
P175E00 10747 Clutch 1 closes unintentionally
P176E00 10694 Clutch 2 opens unintentionally
P176F00 10748 Clutch 2 closes unintentionally
P173500 10666 Clutch position sensor 1, electrical malfunction
P173600 10668 Clutch position sensor 2, electrical malfunction

When several of these are stored at the same time, that points strongly towards the mechatronic unit and its control unit rather than one separate part. Find out what your symptom could mean in our overview of transmission fault codes.

Targeted repair or a new mechatronic unit?

A complete overhaul is often not needed for P175E00. According to the ODIS test plan (ODIS is the Volkswagen Group’s official dealer diagnostic tool), these codes lead to replacing the complete mechatronic unit. Our experience is that the problem sits in the transmission control unit itself and can be repaired in a targeted way. That saves a lot of cost, and it is more durable than it sounds: the rest of the unit, which was working, stays in place.

Audi’s bulletin points the same way. For affected software versions it does not replace the whole mechatronic unit or the gearbox: it removes the old control unit from the mechatronic unit and fits a new one, then runs the setup and basic setting.

Timing matters. If the complaint is caught early, the damage usually stays limited to the electronics. Drive on for months with a gearbox that keeps dropping into limp mode, and the clutches and mechanical parts take damage too. Then it becomes a large repair after all. What your car needs only becomes clear after reading it out.

Why a used TCU will not simply fit

Fitting a second-hand transmission control unit does not work on these gearboxes. The TCU exists in different software versions, and the version has to match the vehicle. Audi’s bulletin, for example, only applies to specific software part numbers and versions, and requires parts that match the four-letter index of the mechatronic unit. Fit a random used unit and you have a car that still does not shift properly, plus a new problem.

There are two more steps after every repair or replacement. The immobiliser has to be adapted to the new control unit, which needs all the car’s keys present. And the basic setting must be carried out again, so the gearbox relearns the clutches and the shift mechanism. Skip it and the shifts stay wrong. Both need proper diagnostic equipment and someone who knows what the measured values should be.

How is P175E00 diagnosed?

The fix starts with reading the gearbox, not with ordering parts. This is the order we work in:

  1. Read the complete fault memory of the gearbox and engine, including symptom codes and whether each fault is current or stored.
  2. Check the software part number and version of the control unit.
  3. Look at the measured values of both clutches and at the oil pressure readings, which reveal faulty pressure sensors.
  4. Check the oil level and condition on wet-clutch gearboxes.
  5. Ask what happened before the fault: recent repairs, a software update, an interrupted basic setting.
  6. Only then decide between a control unit repair, a pressure or actuator fault, or mechanical wear.

For garages

ATR Transmissies can also read the gearbox remotely. For garages that is practical: you do not have to move the car first to know where you stand. Read more about ATR Remote.

What does fixing P175E00 cost?

That depends entirely on the cause. A targeted repair of the control unit is a very different job from a complete mechatronic unit or an overhaul of the whole gearbox. These factors decide the price:

  • Whether the fault is in the control unit, the pressure sensors, the actuator or the clutch.
  • Which gearbox you have (DQ381, DQ200 or DQ500) and which software version.
  • Whether the mechatronic unit has to come out of the gearbox.
  • Whether the clutches are still good, or have been damaged by driving on.
  • The immobiliser adaptation, basic setting and test drive afterwards.

FAQ about fault code P175E00

Can I keep driving with P175E00?

A short distance is usually possible, but it is not wise. In limp mode the car is slow and unpredictable in traffic, and a clutch that is controlled wrongly can suffer further damage. The longer you drive on, the smaller the chance that a targeted repair of the control unit is still enough.

Is P175E the same as P175E00?

Yes. P175E and P175E00 are the same fault, displayed differently by the scan tool. On the DQ381 the same fault also carries symptom code 10747. The meaning stays the same: clutch 1 closes unintentionally.

Can I clear or reset P175E00 myself?

As a test, yes. As a fix, no. If the code comes back quickly, you know the cause is still there. Clearing it also throws away stored data that helps the diagnosis, so have the gearbox read first. Read more about when resetting a DSG helps and when it does not.

Does P175E00 mean my clutch is worn?

Usually not. P175E00 is about the control of clutch 1, and that control comes from the mechatronic unit. In many cases the clutch itself is still fine. Wear mainly comes into play when the car has been driven a long time with the fault, or on a dry-clutch DQ200.

What does the VW fault code P175D mean?

P175D00 means “clutch 1 opens unintentionally”: the opposite of P175E00. The control unit sees clutch 1 release while it should be carrying the drive. On the DQ381 it belongs to the same family of codes and needs the same careful diagnosis.

Can a dual clutch transmission be repaired?

Yes. A DSG can be repaired at component level: the control unit, sensors, solenoids, clutches or bearings, depending on what failed. A complete replacement gearbox is rarely the only option. Diagnosis tells you which part actually needs work.

How much does it cost to replace a DSG mechatronic unit?

There is no fixed price, because it depends on the gearbox type, the software version and whether the whole unit or only the control unit has to be replaced. Coding, immobiliser adaptation and the basic setting come on top. Contact us for a price indication based on your registration number and complaint.

How do I know if my DSG clutch is bad?

Typical signs of a worn DSG clutch are slipping (revs rise without the car speeding up), judder when pulling away and a burning smell. A scan tool with live data shows clutch slip and adaptation values. Fault codes like P175E00 point to control first, so measure before you condemn the clutch. Our overview of DSG problems covers the other symptoms.

Get your DSG read before you replace anything

Fault code P175E00, also written as P175E, means clutch 1 of your DSG closes unintentionally. You notice it as limp mode, only odd or only even gears, and a fault that seems to disappear after a restart. On the DQ381 and DQ200 the code usually points to the mechatronic unit, and then a targeted repair of the transmission control unit is often possible instead of a complete overhaul. Replacing a part alone is not enough: the software version must match, the immobiliser must be adapted and the basic setting must be done again.

Do you recognise these symptoms, or is P175E00 stored in your DSG? We read the gearbox, also remotely for garages, and tell you honestly whether a targeted repair is possible. Book your car in with ATR Transmissies in Montfoort, with your registration number, the complaint and the fault codes.
